Institutional Design Project
WHAT
IDEC Competition
WHEN
Fall 2020
For this project my group and I were assigned to create a veterans living community for the Interior Design Educators Council 2020 student competition. My group for this project consisted of Rebecca McBride, Heather Dowrey, and Jillian Skalski.
The concept for this project was to create an neighborhood feeling within a building. A neighborhood is a cohort of people that create their own diverse community. Each community has different lifestyles, ways of communicating, and some personal connection to each other. Creating an internal neighborhood provides a chance for connection to similar people and developing bonds with the help of community-centered design that is inclusive and flexible. Circulation paths through the space encourage conversation with others & the central park is a large meeting point where individuals can gather to eat or attend activities. The neighborhood façade enables those occupying the space to feel connected to their neighbors and incorporated into the civilian world.
