WHEN

For this project I was assigned to design a lighting fixture based off of the theme, celebration. This was a project for class as well as for the IESNA Boston Section Student Scholarship Design Competition for 2018-2019
Many people around the world celebrate the full moon, but each way the moon is celebrated is unique in its own way. One of the unique celebrations that happens is Loi Krathong; a traditional Thai celebration of the full moon on 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. They celebrate this tradition by floating a krathong down the river; that they have made out of a banana tree trunk and banana leaves. My luminaire that I designed is based off of the krathong itself but with more of an abstract and modern look. The luminaire has wood veneer leaves on the top and leaves on the bottom; the leaves on the bottom are there to represent the reflections of the krathong in the water. Just like people creating their own krathong, the luminaire will also be available for customization of the way the wood veneer leaves are placed. They will also be offered in three different colors of wood veneer; a maple, walnut, and dark green; with two different finishes sliver and gold. The luminaire will come in three different sizes, so it will be available for hospitality and residential spaces.
